Dallas Woman Killed In Car Crash, Driver Charged (ICYMI)

CANTON, GA — A Dallas woman's friend has been charged in connection with a fatal car crash that took her life early Saturday morning in Canton.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has charged 37-year-old Freddie Perdue, of Marietta, with vehicular homicide in the first degree, vehicular homicide in the second degree, reckless driving, weaving over the roadway and driving too fast for conditions, the agency said Sunday.

Shantavia Roberts, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash around 7:26 a.m. on Interstate 575 near Riverstone Parkway, sheriff's office spokesperson Sgt. Marianne Kelley said. The vehicle was traveling southbound when the collisions occurred.

Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell told Patch that Perdue allegedly tried to leave the scene of the accident on foot, but was taken into custody by officers. Perdue was later transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he was treated for a broken leg, Sgt. Kelley added.

He was transported back to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center where he's being held on a $32,266 bond.

Along with the charges filed by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, Sgt. Kelley said Perdue will also face charges in connection to his alleged attempt to escape by the Canton Police Department.
