Do You Love Baked Goods?

Flour Child Cakery owner and manager Robin Hutcheson tells us what baked goods customers love around Valentine's Day. Tell us what cookies, cakes and other confections you enjoy.

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but honestly, that’s probably true for all people. So with that in mind, we asked Robin Hutcheson, owner and manager of in Hiram, about her bakery’s Valentine’s Day wares and what customers tend to buy for their loved ones.

Dallas-Hiram Patch: Is Valentine’s Day and/or the days before it typically good for the baking business?

Robin Hutcheson: Valentine’s is great for the bakery business! The week leading up to Valentine's Day, people come in to see what is available and to place orders to pick up on Valentine's Day or the day before. We already have quite a few orders.

Patch: What kind of baked goods are popular? Any particular ones popular with couples? How about children (for maybe Valentine’s Day parties at school, etc.)?

Hutcheson: Typically people like heart-shaped cookies and cakes, chocolate-dipped strawberries, cheesecakes and chocolate. The great thing about our bakery is we can really personalize something for you. If your wife loves coconut cake and the color pink, we can make a heart-shaped coconut cake and top it with pink hearts. Does you hubby love his motorcycle? We can make a cake and draw his bike on it, with a personal message from you. Does you kid crave Reese’s pieces? We can make heart-shaped cookies with them. If you need cookies or cupcakes for your office or child's class, we can do that for you and give you a discount on orders of a dozen or more. We also have a large selection of gourmet-flavored cheesecakes like Luscious Lemon Raspberry or Banana Foster.

What type of cookies, cakes or other baked goods do you enjoy on Valentine’s Day or any other day during the year?

Patch: Any tips for those looking for baked goods from your shop in the coming days?

Hutcheson: It might not be a bad idea to call ahead or come in and order as soon as you know what you want. We get very busy, and we need to make sure we have the supplies to make your order special. If you're having trouble coming up with an idea, we can always help you figure something out.

Patch: What are your signature goods during Valentine’s?

Hutcheson: I think the sweetest is also the simplest, a single “Piece of My Heart” red velvet cupcake topped with a tiny red heart. We put it in a clear container, and tie it with a red ribbon. Only $2 each and perfect for sending to teachers, friends, coworkers, your kids, hubby … well, anyone! We will have heart-shaped strawberry Linzer Tarts, mini and full-size cheesecakes, cheesecake cupcakes, “Strawberry Fields Forever” cupcakes, red velvet cookies filled with our cream cheese icing, chocolate-dipped strawberries, handmade cherry cordials, and of course, chocolate in many forms.

We will posting pictures and updates on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/FlourChildCakery.
