Hiram Council Could Propose Change to Charter

A special called meeting is set for tonight at 6 to potentially forward a proposed change to the city charter to local legislators.

Hiram councilmen tonight could begin the process to amend the city’s charter.

“The council has brought forward a recommendation for a change or an amendment to the city charter, and it’s something they want to review and perhaps vote on tonight,” City Clerk Cynthia Geyer said Thursday, adding that the issue is the sole item on the meeting’s agenda.

Geyer said she was unsure what the council might be looking to change in the charter, as she did not have a copy of the complete resolution set to be considered.

If the resolution is approved, it would have to be sent to Atlanta to the General Assembly for its consideration.

“Whenever you do an amendment to the city charter, it has to go to the Legislature, so of course they’re under a very serious tight restriction with getting it down with one of our representatives,” Geyer said, adding that approval from the council would mean the city would forward it to local legislators in the hopes of getting their support for the change.
