Hiram Residents Fight Medical Waste Company

The facility would be near Hwy. 278 near a commercial district.

HIRAM, GA — Hiram residents are fighting plans to build a medical waste facility in Paulding County.

WXIA-TV reports that Marietta-based RedX Medical, LLC has plans to build the facility just outside of Hiram in an area that would be close to businesses, restaurants and an elementary school.

The RedX plant would process medical waste including bandages, needles and other hospital refuse, the station reports. There are three other facilities like it in Georgia -- two in the metro Atlanta area and one in Savannah.

The company insists the facility would be safe, but opponents are concerned

“It’s basically the heart of Paulding County,” resident Tami Holtzclaw told WXIA.

The plant would sit in an area zoned industrial, just off U.S. 278, less than a mile from one of the busiest commercial areas in Paulding County.

Holtzclaw and others told the station they'd rather see the plant at an industrial park in Paulding County.

It could be weeks before local zoning authorities, and ultimately the county commission, decide whether to allow the facility.
