The Paulding County Senior 4-H Forestry Judging team placed 5th at the State 4-H Forestry Judging Competition on Saturday, September 28th at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Ga. 4-H’ers from across the state travelled to compete in the one-day competition. This year’s team consisted of five Senior 4-H’ers who spent 10 weeks preparing for the competition by learning to identify seventy-five Georgia trees, forty diseases and insects of forest trees and learning about forest measurements and orienteering. Paulding County 4-H Forestry Judging Team members competing at the state event were Erika Earwood , Kimberly Hadaway, Katie Heerlein, Caiti Schertler, and Aaren Schertler.
Earlier in September, both the Paulding County 4-H Junior and Senior Forestry Judging Teams competed at the Northwest District Forestry Judging Competition in Rockdale County. More than 100 4-H’ers from 10 counties in the district competed in the District Forestry Field Day event. Paulding County 4-H Seniors placed 3rd in the Northwest District competition and Senior team member Katie Heerlein placed as the 3rd highest scoring individual in the Senior competition. Adult Volunteers Connie and Jeff Earwood accompanied the team to the state field day along with Paulding County 4-H Forestry Judging Team and County Extension Coordinator Mary Carol Sheffield. Master Gardener Extension Volunteer, Rachel Dutton also served as coach for the team this season and chaperoned many events. Congratulations to this outstanding group of 4-H’ers on a job well done!
