The weather service said it will be cold enough for snow and sleet to fall and accumulate “mainly along and north of Carrollton to Athens line, where 1 to 2 inches are possible.” Amounts up to 4 inches could be seen in the north Georgia mountains.
Also, up to a quarter inch of ice is possible in the watch area, the weather service said.
More from the NWS Winter Storm Watch alert (issued 3:52 p.m., Saturday):
Timing: Begins as snow Monday morning, changing to snow/sleet Monday evening, and then to patchy freezing rain Monday night. As the system moves out Tuesday evening, light snow will spread over the area.
Impacts: Significant travel impacts, some trees/power lines could be downed, black ice after precipitation ends Tuesday night
Temperatures: Lows in the 20s Monday morning, increasing to mid-30s Monday afternoon. Lows Tuesday morning will be near freezing.
The weather service said the weather system that is expected to bring the wintry weather is still developing, possibly affecting the timing, precipitation type and accumulation.
“A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts. Now is the time to prepare for this winter storm,” the weather service said.
