🌱 Blind Woman Denied Food Service + Gabe's Fails Inspection
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Douglasville.
Morning, neighbors! It's me, Sean Peek, your host of the Douglasville Daily — back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening locally. I'll get right to it.
First, today's weather:
Very hot. High: 97 Low: 73.
Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- The northwest Georgia foster crisis is placing kids in Douglasville. Gordon County faces a sobering lack of foster homes for its children, so much so that the Department of Family and Child Services is forced to place kids an hour-and-a-half to two hours away in Douglasville and Macon. With placements so far away from home, reunification and visitation became that much harder for families. (Rome-News Tribune)
- El Don Tequilas restaurant denied a legally blind woman food service because of her guide dog. Douglasville resident Terri Tidwell has a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa and relies on her guide dog, Finnegan, to go everywhere. When attempting to dine at El Don Tequilas, Terri and her husband approached but, according to Terri, a man walked out and told them it was a health violation to have a dog at the restaurant. Said Terri, "He shut the door and you could hear it click... he locked the door. I was just shaking inside because I was so upset."(11Alive)
- The Douglasville Real Estate Roundup includes a scheduled open house for this weekend. If you're in the market for a new home in Douglasville, be sure to visit this weekend's open house. Several striking residences are still available on the market, including a spacious 2,640 sq. ft. home with 5 beds and 3.5 baths and a quaint 3 bed and 1.5 bath for less than $200,000. (Patch.com)
- Centennial Park welcomes home AD and plans a large firework show. The southeast's largest firework show will celebrate its 25-year anniversary at Centennial Olympic Park on Jul. 3. Douglasville native AD, who just joined the Atlanta Dream, will make their debut this season after a full year sidelined. As the newest guard, AD joins the Dream after two years with New York Liberty. (CBS46)
- Gabe's Downtown's repeat food temperature violations continue to hurt the restaurant. During a recent routine health inspection, Gabe's incurred penalties and earned a failing grade as a result of incorrect food temperatures. The ingredients in the walk-in freezer were either thrown away or put on ice to prevent contamination. Other violations included cross-contamination of food, not easily cleanable kitchen floors, and failure of an employee to wear new, clean gloves. (Atlanta Journal)
