Douglasville Carjacking Suspect Arrested In Coweta County

Donta Thomas reportedly led sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase before crashing into a tree and trying to run away early Wednesday.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — A suspect wanted for carjacking an 83-year-old man's vehicle in Douglasville has been arrested after a police chase in Coweta County.

Donta Thomas, 21, was arrested early Wednesday morning after leading authorities on a high speed chase that ended when the van he was driving crashed into a tree, according to Douglasville Police.

Thomas was taken to a hospital for treatment, then brought to Douglas County, where he is being held without bond.

In March, Thomas was accused of forcibly stealing a car from an 83-year-old man in the parking lot of the Publix at 3316 Hwy. 5 in Douglasville. The stolen vehicle, a red 2014 Kia Soul, was recovered.

According to the Newnan Times-Herald, Thomas was spotted on Interstate 85 by a Coweta County deputy at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday with a headlight out. Instead of stopping, a chase ensued and the vehicle eventually left the interstate at exit 51 and headed west on Hwy 154.

During the pursuit, the sheriff's office said, the van ran over a fence and several mailboxes in the neighborhood before striking the tree, the Times-Herald reported. Thomas fled on foot while two underage female occupants remained inside the vehicle, the paper said.

Thomas complained of an arm injury. One passenger suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung and the other suffered a broken finger.
