Kentucky Derby Kick Networking Event Set

The Douglas County "Keep Calm and Shop Local" campaign continues with a "Kentucky Derby Kick" networking event on April 30 at the Old Courthouse Museum.

The Kentucky Derby is the crown jewel of horse racing, and it generates excitement and energy.  That’s what networking is all about, too, so the “Keep Calm and Shop Local” campaign continues with a “Kentucky Derby Kick” networking event with a purpose!  Douglas County businesses are invited to enjoy horses, hats and hellos on Tuesday, April 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Douglasville. This free and open admission event is designed to encourage one-on-one networking between business people with the purpose of supporting each other’s products and services. Attendees are encouraged to wear name badges and bring lots of business cards to exchange!

Shopping locally is essential to the health and welfare of Douglas County businesses.  For every dollar spent in Douglas County, there is at least a three-fold effect as that dollar recirculates through the community. Douglas County has almost everything anyone needs, and the networking event is one effort to let residents know of products and services in our community.

The Kentucky Derby networking event will feature horse races, “My Old Kentucky Home”, mint julep sampling, and light refreshments for a fun atmosphere.  Visitors will be able to meander through the numerous exhibits of the Old Courthouse Museum and experience a part of Douglas County history. The two-hour drop-in event will include a 20-minute program at about 5:40 p.m. and there will be a drawing for door prizes. Any local business which desires to be highlighted may donate a door prize (no promotional items, $25 minimum value, contact Wes Tallon at 770-920-7593).

The Kentucky Derby is annually held on the first Saturday in May, and the networking is on the Tuesday prior to the Derby. Visitors to the Kentucky Derby are known for their big hats and visitors to the networking event are invited to wear their finest - or their craziest - hat to the festivities. It’s all in the spirit of community!

The Kentucky Derby Kick networking event is being sponsored by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and the Old Courthouse Museum. The event has free admission and is open to the Public.

The “Keep Calm and Shop Local” campaign is a take-off on the “Keep Calm and Carry On” World War II posters in the British Isles as morale boosters during the testing times that lay ahead.  The posters were largely forgotten until they were found 60 years later and they have generated a cottage industry of posters and memorabilia with similar messages. The symbolic crown is that of King George VI.

The “Keep Calm and Shop Local” campaign is being sponsored by the Douglas County Sentinel, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, the City of Douglasville, Main Street Douglasville, and the Chamber of Commerce.
