Korean War Vet Harvey Thad Rand, 82, Dies

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 until 9 p.m.

Harvey Thad Rand, 82 of Douglasville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17. He was born March 27, 1931 in Klamath Falls, OR. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country in the Korean War on the USS Valley Forge aircraft carrier.  He pursued his love of flying and completed commercial flight training.  He retired as a Captain with Eastern Airlines with more than 20 years of service.  In addition to his love of flying and his love of his country, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.  He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church.

Mr. Rand was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alta Dawes Rand.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Frances J. Rand of Douglasville, GA; daughter, Debra Rand of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Colleen Marie Karanovich and her husband Alan of Lithia Springs, GA, daughter, Doe Celeste Newton and her husband Mac of Douglasville, GA; son, Douglas T. Rand and his wife Sherri of Carrollton, GA; grandchildren, Ryan Karanovich, Evan R. Karanovich, Amelia Newton, Taylor Rand, Meredith Newton, Summer Rand, and Rand Newton; and a sister, Marcella Benassini of Walnut Creek, CA.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 until 9 p.m. There will be a brief memorial service in the Chapel following visitation. The funeral mass will be Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church with Father Richard Tibbetts officiating.
