The county district attorney’s office said on Facebook that Jalik Moore pleaded guilty Thursday in a ”non-negotiated” plea. Moore asked the court for only probation, but Assistant District Attorney Steve Knittel vehemently asked the court for a sentence of 20 years, with five years in prison.

The man who was attacked, now 86 years old, was in the courtroom, supporting the suggested sentence.

“ADA Knittel told the court that while the Defendant had no prior felony history, violent attacks against the elderly cannot be tolerated and must be punished seriously,” the DA’s Office said in the announcement.

According to the district attorney, Moore pleaded guilty to assaulting the man, then 85, on Oct. 17, 2014, by placing him in a choke hold and throwing him to the ground before running off.

The elderly man was house-sitting for his daughter and son-in-law when the incident happened.

The DA’s Office said the victim was returning to the house and noticed the blinds had been drawn; they had been open when he left the house earlier in the day. When he approached the front door, three people, including Moore, came running out of the house. Moore reportedly assaulted the man in front of the house.

A short time later, Moore was found by the victim and neighbors in the woods nearby. One of the neighbors, who had a concealed weapon permit and registered weapon, held Moore at gunpoint until police arrived.

“Protecting the elderly members of our community is something we will not compromise on,” District Attorney Brian Fortner said in the announcement. “Aggressively prosecuting these criminals who would violently attack some of the most vulnerable members of Douglas County is absolutely a priority for this office, and I am very pleased with the justice that was done today for the victim in this case.”
