Man Kills Step-Grandfather, Injures Grandmother in Douglasville Shooting: Police

UPDATE: The shooting suspect, who is in custody, has been identified as Patrick Canada.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — A Douglasville man has been charged in a Sunday night shooting that killed his step-grandfather and injured his grandmother.

Patrick Canada, 25, also exchanged gunfire with a police officer before his arrest, authorities say.

At about 9:17 p.m., Douglasville Police were called to a home in the Chapel Hill subdivision for what appeared to be a domestic dispute.

Officer Thomas Lee Altman said he heard a commotion inside the home on the 4900 block of Lake Hollow Court. Upon entering the home's foyer, he said he was confronted by Canada, who was brandishing a firearm.

He shouted verbal commands, according to a police news release, but Canada pointed his gun at the officer. The two exchanged gunfire, but missed one another, police said.

Altman's gun malfunctioned, the police report says, so he retreated to his patrol car to get a rifle. As he did so, he saw Pamela Lynn Henn, 64, leave the rear door of the home with multiple gunshot wounds.

He confronted Canada, who exited through the same rear door, and was able to take him into custody without further incident.

Once Altman and other officers secured Canada, they searched the home and found Douglas Keith Henn, 59, dead from multiple gunshots.

The Henns and Canada lived together in the home, police said.

While the shootings are still under investigation, police said it appeared that Canada and his step-grandfather were having an argument before Canada got a gun and began shooting.

"The Douglasville Police Department and the Major Case Unit are extremely saddened by this act of senseless violence," the department said in the news release. "Our thoughts and hearts are with the Henn family and their loved ones. We will continue to work diligently to ensure this case is handled rigorously and professionally to its full conclusion."
