Scam Alert: Sheriff Warns Of Fake Deputy Calls

The Douglas County sheriff's office never demands payment over the phone, as a recent round of scam calls has claimed.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds is warning residents to be aware of phone scam attempts that have been reported in the county.

In a social media post, the sheriff noted that his office will never demand payment over the phone for things like missed jury duty fines or to clear up an outstanding warrant.

On the call, scammers demand that their victims use a method like PayPal or a prepaid gift card to immediately make phony payments.

"We understand that the callers can be very persistent if not outright intimidating," the sheriff's office post reads.

Anyone who receives one of these calls should simply hang up, the sheriff's office said. They may also report the scam call to the sheriff's office at 770-942-2121.
