Winnie Akin Taylor, 94, Dies

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. from the Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Rob Vincent, Pastor Spencer Teal and Dr. Kenneth Startup officiating.

Winnie Akin Taylor, 94, of Carrollton passed away Monday, Aug. 26, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 6, 1918 in the home where she passed away, daughter of the late LaFayette Walker and Avva Walker Brock. Mrs. Taylor was a 1936 graduate of Roopville High School and in her early years worked as the Society Editor for what is now the Times Georgian.

She later worked and retired as an agent with Progressive Farmer Insurance. Currently she was the longest tenured member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she worshiped for over 79 years. Her outside interest included a love of gardening and she especially enjoyed sharing her bounty with family and friends.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Akin and second husband, Thurlo Taylor; a brother Ralph Walker and a sister Ruby Walker Pyle. Survivors include her children; Joseph Akin and his wife Pam Odom Akin of Hamilton, Linda Akin Elliott and her fiancé Douglas Palamountain of Carrollton, Barbara Akin Teal and her husband Tracy Teal of Johnson City, Tennessee, Alice Akin Startup and her husband Kenneth Startup of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, Avva Akin Perry and her husband Wendell Perry of Bowdon and Dennis Akin and his wife Wanda Langley Akin of Carrollton. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and thirty four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. from the Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Rob Vincent, Pastor Spencer Teal and Dr. Kenneth Startup officiating.

Music will be rendered by her granddaughters, Laressa Teal McCarty, Meredith Teal Copp, Emily Akin Carlisle, Rebecca Startup Partain, Rachael Startup Russell, Jessica Perry McRae and Amanda Perry. Mrs. Taylor’s grandsons, Alan Akin, Glenn Akin, Chris Martin, David Martin, Spencer Teal, Adam Akin and Daniel Akin will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Akin will be placed in state at 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Stripling Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m.
