Report: Woman Shot By Sheriff Making Progress

The Jonesboro woman who was critically wounded by Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill in a May 3 shooting in Gwinnett County is making progress, her father said Monday.

Ernest McCoy told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Gwenevere McCord has lost a kidney, but could be off her ventilator beginning this week. She has had several surgeries, the newspaper reported.

Gwenevere McCord has been at Gwinnett Medical Center since she was shot in the abdomen in what Hill told 911 dispatchers was an accident.

Hill, who hasn’t given authorities many details on the incident, has been charged with reckless conduct in connection with the shooting. The charge is a misdemeanor. Hill was arrested on Wednesday, May 6, and later released on a $2,950 bond, according to jail records.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. on May 3 at a model home located at 2567 Britt Trail Drive, in an area near Tribble Mill Park. McCord is an agent for Paran Realty and worked at the model home.

Ernest McCord told the AJC his daughter was still unable to speak. Once she is able, there are many who are interested to hear her account of the incident. Ernest McCord said he still believes the shooting was an accident.

Neither Hill nor police have revealed much more about what happened leading up to the shooting. After his arrest, Gwinnett Police said in a statement that “Sheriff Victor Hill was afforded the opportunity to provide a statement about the incident but he declined to comment.”

Hill, 50, has made two public statements after the incident, both asking for prayers for the victim and calling the shooting a “tragic accident.”
