New text and email scams plaguing recepients this Easter

There are two new scams targeting unsuspecting recipients this Easter.

The first one involves an email informing recipients of unpaid parking and toll violations. Scammers include a document that comes from Fulton County that says "IMMEDIATE ACTION IS REQUIRED".

The second scam involves a text informing recipients of unpaid traffic violations. Scammers threaten recipients by including phrases such as "Kindly settle payment prior to enforcement to prevent license suspension and legal conflicts".

The Bibb County Tax Commissioner Wade McCord requests "that you speak with the seniors in your life because they may the ones that are targeted the most." in a Facebook post.

Recognizing and preventing scams has been getting harder but with these tips you can help protect yourself from being scammed.

Scammers will try to threaten you into payment and to make you feel rushed. When you do not have time to think and you are concerned with retaliation you are more inclined to go through with payment.

It is a common misconception that scams are only done with bad spelling and poor grammar. With the introduction of AI and grammar checker websites it has gotten far easier to write scam messages. Scammers will attempt to send documents that look legitimate, professional, and texts that look like they come for a legitimate source.

The way of thinking this can never happen to me, I know better is a way for scammers to target your weakness. Scammers only need a few responders to profit heavily nowadays with little risk of prosecution.

You can make a difference. There are multiple avenues of preventing scammers from existing all together. You can call your local congressmen and request them to come up with new laws targeting scammers. In the state of Georgia you are able to call your state house of representative and senate, as well as your federal house of representative and senators, and your governor.
