📰 News we're reading

1. EPD: No contamination found on Caesarstone property in Bryan County (wsav.com) — Richmond Hill and Bryan County officials say state and independent tests found no hazardous contamination at the former Caesarstone property, despite earlier claims about waste barrels. Investigators confirmed stored materials were removed and only minor administrative violations were cited, while city zoning rules now block Westwin Elements' proposed use of the site and Caesarstone pursues a different buyer.

2. Georgia urgent care accused of not paying workers, suspending staff asking about unpaid wages (wsbtv.com) — Federal labor officials say a Richmond Hill urgent care operator failed to pay workers for required meetings, trainings, and overtime, and even suspended an employee who questioned missing wages. The U.S. Department of Labor has now recovered more than $113,000 in back pay, underscoring protections for local healthcare staff and other hourly workers in the area.

3. Bryan County votes to rezone property near Burnt Church Cemetery for commercial use (bryancountynews.com) — Bryan County commissioners have approved commercial rezoning for 39 acres near Burnt Church Cemetery, one of Richmond Hill's oldest burial grounds, despite months of organized opposition. The project could bring a grocery store, medical facility, and retail space near the Belfast River Road–Highway 144 roundabout, while adding traffic, stormwater, and cemetery-protection conditions that the developer must meet before moving forward.

4. Purser named Rotarian of the Year, appointed Assistant Governor for Rotary District 6920 (bryancountynews.com) — Richmond Hill community leader Doris Purser has been named Rotarian of the Year by the Rotary Club of Richmond Hill and appointed Assistant Governor for Rotary District 6920. In her role at Richmond Hill City Center and through Rotary, she'll now help guide clubs in Richmond Hill, Effingham County, and West Chatham to strengthen local service projects and partnerships.

5. Two local bowlers honored at Georgia State USBC Jamboree in Columbus (wtoc.com) — Richmond Hill's own Nelson Tellames has been inducted into the Georgia State Bowling Hall of Fame for his longtime leadership and coaching in the sport. Bowling partner Jeffrey Eastlake of Hinesville also earned a statewide meritorious service award, with both men helping keep leagues and youth bowling thriving at Fort Stewart's Marne Lanes.
