Police: Brookhaven Rape Suspect Could Be Tied To Roswell Cases

Police in Roswell are investigating whether a man arrested in connection to a reported rape in Brookhaven could be connected to cases in their jurisdiction.

Zachary Frommer, spokesperson with the Roswell Police Department, said detectives are working to see if Roberto Gaona-Pina, 39, is possibly behind two alleged rapes reported in 2014.

One case was reported in June and another in October, Frommer stated.

Gaona-Pina was arrested around 12:30 p.m. May 21 by the Opelika, Alabama, Police Department in connection with the April 24 rape that occurred along Buford Highway in Brookhaven, Brookhaven police said on its Facebook page.

Opelika officers responded to a suspicious person call matching the description of the rape suspect wanted by Brookhaven police. Gaona-Pina was still in the area at the time of the call, and was apprehended at a nearby convenience store, Brookhaven police said.

Brookhaven detectives have been working with Opelika Police Department since the alleged rape occurred. Officers in Alabama distributed Gaona-Pina’s photo to residents, an action Brookhaven police said led to the suspect’s capture.

Roberto Gaona-Pina is being held at the Lee County Sheriff Office where he waits extradition back to Georgia.
