The award is given by The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.
“This is a tribute to the hard work and commitment to excellence by our staff, the continued support of the Recreation Commission, Mayor and City Council, and the commitment of the citizens of Roswell to the countless benefits that our department provides the community,” said Morgan Rodgers, director of the city’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department. “’Life Should Be Fun, Let Us Help’ is our motto — something we work hard every day to make a reality. Being in the elite ‘Gold Medal’ category confirms that we are having a positive impact on the lives of those who live in our great city of Roswell.”

Founded in 1965, the awards program honors communities across the United States that ”demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition,” according to its website.
Roswell’s department is a finalist in the Class III category (population 75,001–150,000) and joins three other finalists in the class that will compete for Grand Plaque Award honors this year: city of Allen Parks and Recreation in Texas; Lawrence Parks and Recreation in Kansas; and St. George Leisure Services Department in Utah.
This year’s finalists will compete for Grand Plaque Award honors this summer, and the recipient of that honor will be announced at the 2015 NRPA Annual Conference in September.
