School Leaders Celebrate River Eves STEM Certification

River Eves Elementary School recently became the first Fulton County institution to achieve the designation.

State leaders joined nearly 800 students and local education officials to celebrate River Eves Elementary School becoming the first in the Fulton County School System to achieve STEM certification.

The celebration, held Tuesday, Dec. 1, included a visit from State Schools Superintendent Richard Woods, Fulton County Schools Interim Superintendent Kenneth Zeff, State Senator John Albers, State Representative Wendell Willard, Northeast Learning Community Area Superintendent Cliff Jones, Fulton County Schools STEM Coordinator Donna Barrett-Williams and School Board member Julia Bernath.

Only 11 elementary schools and about 30 schools in the state are certified in STEM education.

Student council president and fifth-grader Kai Lee warmly welcomed the guests who filled the gymnasium to hear Principal Neil Pinnock, school and political dignitaries speak and cheer with the students for their hard work and enthusiasm in embracing the new STEM curriculum implemented over the past few years.

Albers presented the school with a resolution commending the designation.

“The STEM program at River Eves Elementary School provides students with the opportunity to expand their learning horizons and gain experience in career fields that are relevant in today’s workplace,” said Sen. Albers. “With technology fast becoming a critical part of almost every job, this certification will allow all students to build a solid foundation for their future, and I am honored to have been able to present this school with such a prestigious certification.”

River Eves, located in east Roswell, has earned numerous accolades, including two Reward School Titles for Highest-Performing Title I School.
