Braves New Home: Home Plate Arrives at SunTrust Park

The Braves ended their downtown Atlanta tenure on Sunday with a win and the beginnings of their move to Smyrna.

ATLANTA, GA β€” Home plate arrived in Smyrna on Sunday.

The Atlanta Braves closed their tenure at Turner Field with a victory and then brought home plate to their new home at Smyrna's SunTrust Park immediately after the game.

Opening day starter Julio Teheran pitched the Braves' final game at Turner Field with an excellent outing against former MVP Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers. The Braves won 1-0, ending the Tigers' slim hopes for an AL playoff berth.

As he did when the Braves moved from Atlanta Fulton County Stadium to the then-new Turner Field in 1997, Braves legend Hank Aaron personally escorted home plate to SunTrust Park.

The Braves begin the 2017 season on April 14 against the San Diego Padres. The team also will start its home games at 7:30 pm in a move the franchise says will alleviate traffic around the new Cobb County stadium.
