🌱 Rising Heat + Veteran Mental Health Bill

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Smyrna-Vinings.

Good morning, Smyrna-Vinings! I'm here in your inbox per usual to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town.

First, today's weather:

A t-storm around in the p.m. High: 89 Low: 73.

Here are the top three stories in and around Smyrna-Vinings today:

  1. Atlanta police are investigating 18 car break-ins along one Midtown street from the weekend. On Sunday, the police responded to a 7:40 a.m. call to find a line of cars with windows broken in. When police got in touch with some of the car owners, they reported no items of value missing. The police encourage anyone who has experienced something similar to report the crime. (Reporter Newspapers)
  2. Senator Jon Ossoff visited Emory's Brain Health Center to promote a veteran mental health program and possible bill. Dr. Barbara Rothbaum, director of the veteran mental health program of Emory, explains that the program "[is] able to serve veterans all over the country at no cost to them. [It] can fly [the veterans] in, feed them, house them and give them more treatment in two weeks than most people will get in a year." If passed, the Military Families Mental Health Services Act would expand free mental health care to veterans and their families. (Champion)
  3. A recent investigation shows Atlanta's EMS response times are rising by the minute. An average Atlanta metro resident is waiting nearly 30 minutes for emergency services to arrive, even in dire situations. For calls deemed less urgent, services arrived in 45-90 minutes. Randy Hubbell was told EMS would arrive at his home "in a few hours" to aid his partner after falling down the stairs. The 911 operator explained call volume as the reason for the delays.
