Gym bag must-haves keep you prepared and motivated to keep movin'

“I’m too busy.” That’s probably the number one reason most of us give for not exercising regularly. And, when we do get a few extra minutes, we usually are without the proper clothing, shoes or otherwise not “workout ready.”
So how do you find the time – even 15 minutes – to get in exercise? Add your gym bag to your list of “must haves” when you leave the house! Stock it with your workout gear and keep it in the car or at work for easy access.
The key to leading a healthy lifestyle is being prepared. So after you pack lunch bags for the kids, pack a bag for yourself. And get movin’!

Here’s a sneak peek into my bag for inspiration (I always keep it in my car just in case a simple drop-off at practice turns into an hour-long affair).
- It’s All About the Bag: Start by getting a bag that’s both functional and fashionable. If you don’t like the bag, then you won’t carry it! And ladies, there are a lot of really cute, fun bags out there now that don’t look like gym bags.
- What’s on Your Feet: When choosing the right sneakers, try to marry function and fashion. If they’re old and ugly (#FAIL), you’re never going to wear them. And if you’re showering at the gym, a pair of inexpensive flip flops can keep your feet clean, protected and germ-free.
- Towels, Toiletries and T-Shirts, Oh My: I usually have a hand towel to use during the workout and one for after the shower/change. And it’s always a good idea to have an extra t-shirt. Whether you change into it before the workout or after, you’ll never regret having it! For the shower, don’t forget your toiletries. Think airport carry-on sized items and baby wipes (it’s literally a bath in a box).
- Quench Your Thirst, Feed Your Body: Before, during and after the workout, what you put into your body is very important. The name of the game is HYDRATION! Whether you’re taking a brisk walk on your lunch hour, shakin’ off some stress in a Zumba class or taking an evening stroll, staying hydrated will keep you movin’. And all beverages are hydrating – so drink your favorite diet soda before or a coconut water for energy after to keep going. If you’re hungry post-workout, pack a nutrition bar or drink that helps replenish lost nutrients like a vitaminwater.
- Music to Move To: What’s a workout without music? I always keep my iPod playlist updated and keep my favorite “pick-me-up” songs in heavy rotation. Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” gets me movin’ every time!
It’s been said that getting there is half the battle. So I say preparation is the motivation to getting there. Even if it’s 20 minutes, working some movement into your day can go a long way to keeping you sane and on the right track. Need motivation? It’s in the bag!
