Spring Training... The Life and Times of the Honeybee in Mableton!
Early Spring.. nail biting for the beekeeper

The bees are buzzing and we the beekeepers are all waiting on what will happen with the weather.
Two weeks ago I was covering my blueberries hoping that I could save some of the blooms because the temperature was going to drop to 18 degrees. We covered them and I am still waiting. The bees stayed in their house for the most part, but did sneak out in the afternoon for a quick grab and go at the feeders!
Right now, more beehives die out because they starve to death.

The plants have not really started blooming. The queens are laying and they have lots of babies, up to 2000 per day. That certainly is a lot of mouths to feed. The workers are scrambling, cleaning, feeding, grooming, collecting, packaging, cleaning, feeding, grooming, etc!
If we have another cold snap, then the bees won't be able to go out of their house, to get feed, use up what little stores they have right now, starve and the babies freeze.
