Major Craig Owens Ruled “Qualified” as Candidate for Sheriff

Congratulations to Major Craig Owens, candidate for Cobb County Sheriff, on his victory today.

On March 26, 2020, Cobb County Board of Elections & Registration disqualified Major Craig Owens as a Democratic candidate for Sheriff. Major Owens appealed the decision to the Superior Court.
Today, the Cobb County Superior Court heard evidence regarding Major Owens’ appeal, and the judge reversed the decision of the Board. The judge ruled that Major Owens’ failure to submit the affidavit described in O.C.G.A. § 15-16-1 (c)(1)(J)(3) by the deadline in the code section was not a significant reason to disqualify an otherwise qualified candidate. Major Owens is hereby qualified as a candidate for the office of Sheriff in the May 19, 2020 Democratic General Primary.
Major Owens, who is commander of the Cobb County Police Department’s Precinct 2, issued the following statement:

“Voters deserve a choice. The petty actions that led us to this moment make clear the difference between me and my opponents. This election is about restoring trust and integrity to the Cobb sheriff's office. It's time to do away with the days of intimidation and replace them with the respected leadership you deserve. To the voters of Cobb, I want you to know this: a new day is coming. Now it’s time to vote so truth and justice will prevail.

I would like to thank the Cobb County Superior Court for affirming what my life and career of service indicate – I am qualified for this position. When I consulted with my wife and family and made the choice to run for Cobb County sheriff, we went in with clear eyes and full hearts, knowing the journey would not be easy. We decided to run this race because Cobb deserves better.”
