Lithonia resident honored by Y

Jazzmin McKelvey-Hunter of Lithonia is receiving the 2013 Volunteer of the Year award at the YMCA Academies of South DeKalb. McKelvey-Hunter began volunteering with the Y when her daughter entered the pre-k program at the Y Academies. She serves in the classroom by reading to the children, helping with projects and administrative duties, and volunteers at the center’s various festivals, special events and activities.

“The Y is synonymous with being a place where young adults, teens and children can learn to be upstanding members of society and build lifelong, healthy friendships,” says McKelvey-Hunter. “By volunteering at the Y, I can see I am making a difference in the lives of others.”

The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and connect.
