The long list of local names highlights academic achievement across Lowndes County and surrounding communities, recognizing students' hard work as the new school year gets underway. 
• VSU's economic impact climbs to $412.5 million, supports more than 3,400 jobs (valdostadailytimes.com) — Valdosta State University now pumps an estimated $412.5 million into the Valdosta-Lowndes County economy, supporting nearly 3,500 jobs on and off campus. Local residents benefit through student and staff spending, university operations, and programs that attract employers and prepare graduates to live, work, and invest in the surrounding South Georgia region.
• Andy's Astronomy: Space Telescope Headed Back to Earth (hhjonline.com) — A recent astronomy column notes that a bright fireball on August 21 was visible as far north and west as Valdosta, highlighting how often meteors streak over our region. It also explains the aging Swift space telescope's uncontrolled return to Earth and encourages residents to skywatch, use free stargazing apps, and report any future fireball sightings online.
