City Of Woodstock Collects 800K Pounds Of Recycling For Contest

WOODSTOCK, GA — The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Going Green Committee has concluded their Eighth Annual Mayors’ Recycling Challenge event which challenged cities in Cherokee County to encourage their residents to recycle during the months of June and July. The winning city for most pounds collected per capita and the winning city for highest percentage increase over last year were announced during the Chamber's September Good Morning Cherokee breakfast.

A variety of sanitation services partnered with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce on this initiative by tracking curbside and large recycling container weigh slips within the participating cities. Ball Ground, Holly Springs, Waleska, and Woodstock were tracked by the following Chamber Member sanitation services: Cycle Works Sanitation & Recycling, Santek Waste Services of Georgia, and Waste Management, and Canton was tracked by Advanced Disposal.

The City of Woodstock collected the most recycling which totaled 847,273 pounds followed by City
of Canton – 321,030 pounds, Holly Springs, 277,853, Waleska – 42,400 pounds, and Ball Ground – 27,760 pounds. The combined total collected by all the cities was 1,516,316 pounds.

The City of Waleska for the eighth consecutive year collected the most recycling per capita with 44.03 pounds per resident, as determined based on 2018 U.S. Census population estimates.

Additional per capita totals included City of Woodstock – 26.29 pounds/resident, City of Holly Springs – 21.51 pounds/resident, City of Ball Ground – 13.10 pounds/resident, City of Canton –10.95 pounds/resident.

The City of Woodstock was recognized for having the highest percentage increase of collected recyclables over the previous year. This year the city collected 847,273 pounds, which is a 67 percent increase over last year's 508,000 pounds.
