Honolulu Police shut down 4 illegal gambling rooms, seize cash and machines (kitv.com) — Honolulu police recently shut down four illegal gambling rooms on Hausten Street, seizing 74 gaming machines, more than $38,000 in cash, and illegal drugs. While no arrests have yet been reported, HPD says it will keep targeting these operations and urges Honolulu residents to report suspected game rooms through its dedicated tip line.
   

2. New Food Waste Collection System for Honolulu Residents (news-usa.today) — Starting October 1, Honolulu households using the three-cart system must begin separating food scraps for collection, sending them to island composting instead of crowded landfills. City officials say this shift, affecting neighborhoods from urban Honolulu to Windward Oahu, is crucial for extending landfill life and cutting methane, and they're urging residents to keep organic bins free of plastic and other contaminants.
   

3. Hawaiʻi Public Safety & Security Expo to host free family education this week (khon2.com) — This Saturday's free Public Safety & Security Expo at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center in Honolulu invites families to meet Honolulu police and fire personnel, the FBI, and other agencies while exploring safety resources and technology. Running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event offers kid-friendly activities, giveaways, and career information for anyone considering work in law enforcement or public safety.
   

4. 88-year-old woman rescued from overturned car in Manoa Valley (kitv.com) — Emergency crews in Manoa Valley rescued an 88-year-old woman after her car flipped onto its roof near Kahaloa and Woodlawn drives on Wednesday night. Honolulu Fire Department personnel freed her from the vehicle, and Honolulu EMS treated her at the scene before taking her to the hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition, with crash causes still under investigation.
   

5. Merrie Monarch: 3-year pause on wild harvest of maile, palapalai and ohia lehua (staradvertiser.com) — Cultural leaders meeting in Honolulu have agreed that the Merrie Monarch Festival will pause wild harvesting of maile, palapalai, and ohia lehua for at least three years to protect native forests. The change encourages use of cultivated plants instead, responding to concerns about overharvesting and rapid ohia death ahead of the next festival in Hilo in spring 2027.
