Green announces two Major Disaster Declaration approvals to help Hawaiʻi recover (mauinow.com) — Honolulu residents can expect federal disaster-recovery dollars to start flowing after President-approved Major Disaster Declarations unlocked FEMA Public Assistance funding for the City and County of Honolulu following August's Hurricane Lala and September's Hurricane Lowell. The aid will reimburse at least 75% of costs for debris removal and damaged public facilities, easing the burden on local government and nonprofits.
   

2. Honolulu Permitting Issues Delay Housing Citywide (governing.com) — Honolulu residents face some of the nation's longest building permit delays, with waits for a typical single-family home growing from about two months in 2000 to more than 14 months by 2024. Researchers link these slowdowns to higher housing costs and fewer new homes, while the city's permitting department says recent reforms and new technology aim to speed approvals.
   

3. Hawaii's biggest pickleball tournament brings huge turnout (khon2.com) — Honolulu pickleball players have a big weekend ahead as the Hawaii Pacific Health ESPN Honolulu Open, the state's largest indoor pickleball tournament, packs in nearly 800 competitors across youth, senior, and new collegiate divisions. Matches run through Sunday evening, giving local fans and players plenty of chances to watch or join the fast-growing sport in action.
   

4. Sex assault survivor shares challenges of coming forward; resources available in Hawaii (kitv.com) — Support for sexual assault survivors in Honolulu includes 24-hour care at Kapiolani Medical Center's Sex Abuse Treatment Center, where help is available regardless of when or where the assault occurred. Advocates stress that survivors can access medical care, counseling, and hotlines without filing a police report, and encourage more safe spaces in local schools and communities for healing conversations.
   

5. Filipino food week returns to Hawaiʻi this October (khon2.com) — Honolulu food lovers can dive into Filipino Food Week from October 11–18, with local restaurants and the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu spotlighting vinegar-inspired dishes under this year's "SUKA" theme. Chef Chai on Kapiolani is offering a special five-course, family-style Filipino menu for $65, blending traditional flavors with a modern touch.
