LITH Recreational Fire And Burning Permit Rules

To prevent awful accidents like the April Glendale Heights bonfire explosion, LITH has only one exception to needing a permit.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — It's bonfire season! That means fun gatherings, barbecues, late nights and relaxing by the fire, but it also means potential danger. The Lake in the Hills Police Department released up-to-date information on safe burning practices and permit laws.

To get a permit, certain safety conditions need to be met. They make sure the fire doesn't spread to buildings, doesn't get too big, that there's a responsible adult present, that the fire can be easily put out if need be and more.

In April, a Glendale Heights bonfire went horribly wrong when gasoline was poured into the fire, police say, causing an explosion. Twelve were injured, some seriously, and one went into a coma.

Certain outdoor fires don't require a permit, though. If you have a professionally built or installed fire pit, all of the same safety conditions apply, but you don't need a permit.

One teen injured in the Glendale Heights bonfire, Korryn Bachner, had severe burns to her face, so she couldn't attend prom. Some creative and generous friends decided to bring prom to her.
