Fire Leaves Gabrielle Lane House Uninhabitable: AFD

Investigators continue examining the scene to determine where and why the fire started, officials said.

AURORA, IL — A mixed-use building with a residence in the 3600 block of Gabrielle Lane was deemed uninhabitable after a fire broke out Monday morning, Aurora fire officials said.

A total of 30 personnel were dispatched at about 10:55 a.m. The incident was originally dispatched as a box alarm for a reported garage fire, but it was later upgraded due to conditions, according to a news release.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire on the first floor of the two-story mixed-use building that serves as both a commercial storage facility office and a residence. The fire extended to the second floor and attic, officials said.

"Fire conditions were present on the first floor with extension to the upper levels, so while the garage was involved early on, it has not yet been confirmed as the point of origin," spokesperson Jim Levicki told Patch.

Crews advanced hose lines and initiated an interior fire attack while truck company personnel ventilated the property. The fire was under control within 15 minutes of the first unit's arrival. Investigators continue examining the scene to determine where and why the fire started, Levicki said.

All residents evacuated prior to firefighters' arrival, and no victims were found during searches.

The structure was deemed uninhabitable due to the extent of the damage, resulting in the closure of the commercial storage office and operations, officials said. The property owner is providing housing assistance for the three residents who were displaced.

“The quick actions of our crews helped contain this fire and prevent further damage to the structure,” Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel said in a statement. “Fires involving mixed-use buildings can present unique challenges, making early detection and a coordinated response critical.”

Monday's incident is the third garage fire reported in one week in Aurora, Patch reported.
