Escaped Killer Nabbed On Chicago's South Side

Chicago cops apprehend Kamron Taylor, 23, Friday evening responding to call for a "suspicious person" after three-day manhunt.

The three-day manhunt for an escaped killer from the Kankakee County Jail ended late Friday night on Chicago’s South Side.

Kamron Taylor, 23, was taken into custody in the 9200 block of South Stony Island after Chicago police officers responded to a call of a suspicious person, according to Chicago Police News Affairs.

As officers approached the escapee, Taylor fled on foot. After a brief foot chase, Taylor was apprehended and found to have a gun, police said.

Taylor reportedly refused to identify himself but police, thinking it might be the escaped killer, were able to positively identify, Kankakee County Sheriff’s officials said.

The convicted killer has been on the loose since early Wednesday morning, after sheriff’s officials said he beat a jail guard unconscious at the Jerome Combs Detention Center. Taylor allegedly took the correctional officer’s uniform, keys and SUV, a brown 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. Police believe he also took the guard’s weapon.

Taylor was found guilty by a jury after a highly charged murder trial in Kankakee County, where prosecutors said he killed a man in June 2013 during a botched robbery attempt, the Kankakee Daily Journal reported.

He was awaiting sentencing when he escaped. Kankakee County Sheriff Tim Bukowski said that he believed Taylor had outside help, reports said.

“We have a lot of background information, so we have to assume that once he left here, someone had to have picked him up or met him and now is helping him either to have fled the area or to conceal him in this area,” Sheriff Bukowski told ABC 7 Chicago.

The sheriff further added that staff reductions from budget cuts may have caused the security breach.

Earlier Friday the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office had announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to Taylor’s capture.

Taylor will be charged locally on the gun charge before he is turned over to the Kankakee County authorities, Chicago police said in a written statement.

The Kankakee County Sheriff is expected to hold a press conference later Saturday morning.
