📰 News we're reading
• Judge grants temporary halt to District 47 action on school boundary changes (shawlocal.com) — A McHenry County judge has temporarily blocked Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 from advancing its controversial elementary school boundary changes unless its advisory committee complies with Illinois Open Meetings Act rules. The order, in place through Oct. 13, stems from a Crystal Lake parent's lawsuit alleging secret committee meetings and incomplete FOIA responses. District officials still plan a public board presentation Oct. 19 and a November vote.

• Lakewood eyes possible referendum to fund rising fire protection costs (shawlocal.com) — Crystal Lake Fire and Rescue's contract to cover nearby Lakewood is driving up Lakewood's costs so fast that village leaders may seek a dedicated fire protection tax referendum or annexation into the Crystal Lake Rural Fire Protection District. Fire service now consumes most of Lakewood's tax levy, squeezing funds for police, roads, and other services. Officials are weighing tax guardrails and cost cuts before asking voters for more money.
