Downers Grove Offers Home Sharps Disposal At Police Department

Residents can drop off their full sharps containers at the police station during and after hours.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — If you live in Downers Grove and use a home sharps container to dispose of needles, catheters, and other disposable medical equipment, you'll be relieved to know there's an easier way to get rid of your filled containers. The Downers Grove Police Department now offers a station that residents can use to discard their personal sharps containers once they're full.

The metal disposal station will be available in the police lobby at 825 Burlington during normal business hours and also after hours to accommodate the needs of residents. To dispose of a home sharps container, just bring the full container, sealed, into the police station and drop it into the large metal disposal system's drawer.

Village officials hope the new disposal method will make it easier for residents to safely get rid of these sensitive items. Prior to the new system, residents were required by Illinois law to either place used sharps items in a separate, sealed container and label it "not recyclable" or to arrange for a medical disposal pickup or dropoff.
