First Week of DGS Wrestling Produces Wins

South beats North 29-24 on Nov. 22.

In a exciting meet that lasted over three hours, the defeated the 29-24 on Tuesday, November 22nd . The meet came down to the last match of the night at 195 lbs. The team that won the match would win the dual. Senior Co-Captain Mark Clark, battled into the
second overtime period and scored a 2 point reversal and the rode his Trojan opponent out to earn the 3-2 decision. The 15th Annual North-South Thanksgiving meet featured four total overtime matches as both teams battled for the lead.

After dropping two close matches in the first period, the Mustangs got on the scoreboard with sophomore Jake Oskvarek earning a 5-3 decision. North and South traded victories at the next two weights and the score was 12-7 with the Trojans in the lead. Freshman Joe Nugent pinned his North opponent to give the
Mustangs the lead for the first time in the dual, 13-12. A victory by Senior Ed Wenmouth, who moved up to 132 pounds, expanded South's lead, 16-12. The Trojans regained the lead 24-16 with wins at the next three weights.

The South wrestlers battled back winning the next four weights. Junior, Alex Anaya moved up a weight class and earned a victory at 160 lbs. He was followed by his Senior brother, Willie Anaya, whose major decision brought the Mustangs to within one point of taking the lead. Senior Anthony Westfall, in his first
varsity match won a 3-1 decision to put the Mustangs back in the lead. The score was 26-24 going into the final match. Clark, a starter on South's quarterfinals football team, pushed the pace in the match, but was unable to score any offensive points in regulation time. After the first overtime period, the score remained 1-1. In the next overtime period, Clark fell behind 1-2, but was able to reverse his Trojan opponent to secure the win and the meet for the Mustangs.

On Saturday, the Mustang wrestlers competed in the Naperville Central Quad. The team went 2-1 with victories over Batavia 47-13 and the hosts, Naperville Central, 49-23. Their only loss was against Lane Tech, 23-41. South opened the day with a 23-41 loss to Lane. Leading the Mustangs was Senior Willie Anaya who recorded three pins.
