Learn more about current topics in healthcare at Midwestern University’s Mini-Medical School. The Mini-Medical School is a four-week medical education program open to community members (adult, college, and high school students). The program is designed for people who want to learn more about topics taught in medical school or other professional healthcare programs at Midwestern University. The Mini-Medical School will be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:15 PM on October 17, October 24, November 7, and November 14. All sessions will be held at the University’s campus located at 555 31st Street, Downers Grove, IL.

A Midwestern University faculty member or alum will present each session and Midwestern University students will help facilitate the presentations. The University is the home of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of Pharmacy, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Dental Medicine-Illinois, and the Chicago College of Optometry. The cost of the entire program is $25; a single session is $10. Topics to be covered include:

  • Cancer: Why and How Good Cells Go Bad – gain an understanding of the changes that occur at the DNA level when gene functions are altered to serve cancer growth. Cancer originates in a single cell, which then gives rise to a progeny of cells with multiple genetic alterations.
  • The Diabetes Epidemic – increase your knowledge of diabetes mellitus, a condition that affects the body’s ability to use glucose for metabolism (energy). As part of this lecture, you will learn how osteopathic physicians can treat patients with diabetes using a holistic approach.
  • Cranial Nerves: What They Do and What Happens When They Don’t – explore all 12 cranial nerves and learn how to test their functions through a hands-on approach. Participants will also have a chance to visit the gross anatomy lab following the presentation for further engagement with both cranial and post-cranial anatomy.
  • Dental Curriculum for the Modern Dentist – learn more about the novel, integrated curriculum being used to educate the modern dental student. Participants will spend time in the dental simulation clinic and take part in a hands-on demonstration of a simulated patient and the use of advanced dental equipment.
