75 More Virus Cases Reported In Elmhurst

Elmhurst is among seven DuPage County towns with more than 1,000 cases.

ELMHURST, IL — For the second week in a row, Elmhurst has seen a 7 percent increase in coronavirus cases.

As of Sunday, the city had 1,099 coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning, up 75 from a week before, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

On Friday, Elmhurst School District 205 announced its classes were going fully remote for two weeks starting Wednesday. This is because DuPage County has reached the "substantial community transmission category," the district said.

As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst numbered 47, the same it has been for weeks.

Elmhurst is one of seven DuPage County towns with more than 1,000 cases — Naperville (1,542), Addison (1,478), West Chicago (1,302), Glendale Heights (1,181), Carol Stream (1,123) and Lombard (1,015). Except for Naperville, the towns are smaller in population than Elmhurst.

Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus, but those numbers have barely budged statewide in recent months. The Grove of Elmhurst, Lexington and Artis suffered outbreaks in the first months of the pandemic, but they have since been contained.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 23.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 17.7 in La Grange Park, 17.8 in Darien, 20.3 in Western Springs, 22.4 in DuPage County, 22.6 in Clarendon Hills, 24.7 in Hinsdale, 27.4 in suburban Cook County, 27.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands) and 28.6 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 344,048, up 8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 9,214 state residents.

Nationally, 8.1 million people have caught the virus, up 5 percent from the week before. A total of 218,511 people have died from the virus in the United States.

Meanwhile, Elmhurst Hospital's coronavirus caseload was 22 as of Monday, up six from a week before. In the early weeks of the pandemic, the number hovered around 60.

As of Monday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths at the hospital was 93 since the pandemic's beginning, the same as the previous week.

Since March 24, 606 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
