Glen Ellyn Approves Final Apex 400 Plans Amid Ongoing Conflict
The $40 million project includes 107 luxury apartments to occupy the former site of Giesche Shoes.

GLEN ELLYN, IL --The Glen Ellyn village board approved the final plans for the $40 million Apex 400 project Monday night. The controversial development, which replaces a historic shoe store, with 107 luxury apartments, more than 8,800 square feet of commercial space, and a two-story garage, continues to meet with protest from residents.
Members from the group "Save Main" held a rally Saturday ahead of the vote. They contend that the five-story structure "will dominate the skyline and forever diminish the character of our town."
Save Main has raised nearly $14,0000 in just a month in a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising awareness for their efforts to fight Apex 400 and other projects they feel take away from the look and feel of downtown Glen Ellyn.

The group's efforts are supported by a lawsuit that was recently filed in an attempt to block construction of the Apex 400 project. The approval of the Apex 400 plans come after the village lost a long battle over a gas station that was proposed to be built at the Five Corners intersection in Glen Ellyn.
On Facebook, Glen Ellyn Village President Diane McGinley writes, "I understand Apex 400 is emotional, but let's keep things in check please." McGinley wrote that she had to delete a derogatory comment directed at the village board.

In a news release announcing the Apex 400 approaval, McGinley said, "This project reflects the Village's continued commitment to engage residents and businesses early on in the process so that their ideas and thoughts are incorporated into the final outcome."
She added, "We are excited to welcome Apex 400 into our downtown where we envision the development heightening foot traffic, enhancing the downtown's vibrancy and increasing tax revenues."
Apex 400 developers are set to seek permits in the coming weeks and hope to start construction in summer 2019.
