Student Accused Of Making Threats With Gun At Glenbard South

GLEN ELLYN, IL — A Glenbard South High School student is being held on $500,000 bond after being accused of threatening other students with a gun in the school's parking lot. The student, identified as a male, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in public (school) and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Prosecutors say that on May 8 a student used a gun to threaten other students in the parking lot of the school. According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, an unloaded .44-caliber gun was found in the student's car.

“School safety remains a top priority of my office,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

He continued, “Schools are central to our communities and incidents such as alleged in this case, can have a chilling effect on not only the students and staff at the school, but all of us. We must all work together to ensure our schools remain a safe place where teachers can teach and students can learn without fear for their personal safety. My office takes any sign of potential violence involving a school very seriously and anyone suspected of any such behavior will be investigated and charged accordingly."

DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick added that he was "very grateful this situation was diffused in a peaceful and professional manner."

The student is set to appear in court again on May 17.
