Boyfriend Charged With Manslaughter In Death Of GBS Student To Remain Detained

The teen accused of accidentally shooting Angie Morris in the head was ordered to remain in custody until his next court date.

SKOKIE, IL — The 17-year-old charged in the fatal shooting of Glenbrook South High School senior Angelique "Angie" Morris was ordered to remain in juvenile detention until his next court date, the Pioneer Press reports. The boy, identified by the Cook County Sheriff's Office as Morris' boyfriend, allegedly shot her in the face while handling a gun.

Police were called to the home of the accused teen in the 9900 block of Linda Lane in an unincorporated area of Des Plaines for a report of a shooting around 1 a.m. on July 8, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

Morris, a resident of unincorporated Glenview, was found shot in the head at the scene. Her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Morris' aunt, Veronica Knight, told the Pioneer Press the family is upset that the 17-year-old has been charged as a juvenile.

"We're furious. We want him to be tried as an adult," Knight told the paper the family is looking into what it can do to charge the boy as an adult.

A spokesperson for the Cook County State's Attorney told Patch the office does not discuss charging decisions when asked about prosecutors' decision to charge Morris' accused killer in juvenile court. When asked about any further charges related to the the legal status or ownership of the firearm that allegedly killed Morris, the spokesperson said the office does not discuss possible future charges.

At juvenile court Monday, the teen's attorney said he is a student at Evanston Township High School with a supportive family, Pioneer Press reported. The mother of the teen described the shooting as a "freak accident" and said her son was grieving. She told the paper her son and Morris had been dating sporadically for several years, but Morris denied to her family that she had been in a relationship with her alleged killer, her older sister said.

According to his mother, the 17-year-old boy facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter lives with one of his grandmothers to help care for her. His mom said he, his grandmother and Morris were the only people in the house at the time. She also said the police never took an official statement from her son, according to Pioneer Press.
