Source Of GBS School Shooting Threat Identified, Arrested: Police

A 15-year-old boy was arrested Monday and charged with disorderly conduct over a threatened school shooting at Glenbrook South, police said.

GLENVIEW, IL — The source of a threatening message found at Glenbrook South High School has been identified, according to school officials. Principal Lauren Fagel said an investigation by the district determined there was no direct threat to the school community. In a letter to students and parents Monday night, Fagel thanked the community for its patience and cooperation amid increased security measures.

Two students informed administrators on Thursday that they had found a message written on the back of a desk saying, "There will be a school shooting on Sept. 25 2018," Fagel said last week. She notified the community students would be searched upon arrival at Saturday's homecoming dance and screened as they entered school Monday.

"Over the next few days, we will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that our students and staff are safe and that a level of comfort has been restored," Fagel said. All regularly scheduled school events will continue as scheduled Tuesday.

Northbrook/Glenview District 30 Superintendent Brian Wegley also told parents the increased level of security and police presence around its schools would remain in place. And both administrators emphasized the importance of staying connected and heeding the directive to "see something, say something."

Fagel did not describe what kind of discipline, if any, would be imposed on the person or people responsible for the threat, nor did she specify whether a student, staff member or someone else had been determined to be responsible for the message.

Glenview police have been notified of the source of the message, Fagel said, and a police investigation remains ongoing. Glenview police spokesman Sgt. Jim Foley did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

"We understand that this situation has created stress and anxiety for our students and staff," Fagel told parents. "Please encourage your student to reach out to the Student Services Department if he or she would like to talk with an adult."
