Uptick In Crime In Suburbs Leads To Increase In Police Staffing

Glenview announced Sunday night it is bulking up its police force amid violence in Chicagoland following the death of George Floyd.

GLENVIEW, IL — Amid reports of "possible looting" in Chicago, and an uptick in crime and unrest spreading into the suburbs following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota, the Glenview Police Department announced Sunday night it is bulking up staffing within the police department and patrol officers are on alert. Police are coordinating with other area law enforcement agencies.

"There have been a number of occurrences of damage and theft in some suburban communities. Businesses and residents are advised to pay heed and take precautions," Glenview Police said. "Your safety is our priority. If there's an emergency or if you see anything suspicious, call 911."

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced Sunday night he has activated the full department to in response to "incidents of unrest today." The Cook County Sheriff's Department is working in coordination with the city of Chicago and the suburbs in an "all hands on deck" effort.

"We will show what 21st century community policing should look like — protecting the most vulnerable among us and leading with deescalation," Dart said. "We will make our community proud — and that includes arresting those who have chosen to hijack peaceful protests for criminal purposes."
