HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

THEFT
Someone stole a burgundy purse from the Sunrise assisted living home at 1600 block of Green Bay Road between 2:20 and 10:45 p.m. on Dec. 6. One of the credit cards taken from inside was later used fraudulently at an unspecified business.

STOLEN CAR
Two Nissans that had been left unlocked with keys inside were stolen from a driveway in the 100 block of Ridge Road between 10 p.m. Dec. 8 and 8:45 a.m. Dec. 9. Both cars were later found in Chicago, with a Rogue recovered on the 9th and a Maxima recovered on the 11th.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole a Northwestern jacket, some change and a vehicle registration sticker from a white Jeep Grand Cherokee that was left unlocked in the 200 block of Ridge Road between 4:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 9.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone spray-painted a smiley face on a tree and a depiction of male genitalia on a sidewalk in the 800 block of North Avenue at some point prior to 2:45 p.m. Dec. 13.

CRIMINAL TRESPASSING
Police were dispatched to a burglary alarm at a home in the first block of Laurel Avenue and found that someone appeared to have broken in through a lower level east entry door inside a screened-in porch area. Officers found broken glass on the entry door leading to a large storage room, but nothing was reported stolen from inside the home.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 2900 block of Point Lane through a rear sliding glass door at some point between Nov. 2 and Dec. 16. The home's master bedroom closets and bathroom were found ransacked and a safe had been forcibly removed from a wall mount. The value of the stolen items were not known at the time of the report.

SHOPLIFTING
Someone stole $180 worth of cosmetics from the Walgreens at 655 Elm Place around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 20.

STOLEN VAN
A patrolling officer noticed a U-Haul van parked on the side of Skokie Valley Road with its emergency lights flashing around 10 p.m. on Dec. 25. The officer spoke to the driver, who said she had stopped to retrieve an item from the back. Police learned the van had been reported stolen from Chicago after it had not been returned after being rented. The driver was released with a citation for driving without a valid license.

THEFTS FROM VEHICLES

  • Someone stole a battery from a Ford F150 parked in the 300 block of Laurel Avenue between 3 p.m. Dec. 10 and 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14. Two wires were cut to remove the battery from the unlocked car, but nothing else was reported damaged or stolen.
  • Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Ford F450 work truck parked behind a building in the 1400 block of Deerfield Road at some point prior to 5 p.m. Dec. 21 for an estimated loss of $2,000 to $3,000.

THEFTS

  • Someone stole a black wallet and a Samsung J3 cell phone from a shopper at the Jewel-Osco, 1600 Deerfield Road, from a purse that was left in a cart around 2:45 p.m. on Dec. 10. One of the credit cards in the wallet was later used fraudulently at Target to purchase more than $500 worth of American Express gift cards.
  • Someone may have stolen a driver's license and two credit cards from a purse that was left unattended in an unlocked locker at an unspecified business in the 1800 block of Second Street. One of the credit cards was later used fraudulently.
  • Someone stole a 10-pound sledgehammer worth $40 and a three-pound sledgehammer worth $30 from a storage unit of an unspecified business in the 1500 block of Old Deerfield road at some point during the "last couple of months." Representatives of the business also reported that nearly 100 rolls of toilet paper had been reported missing from a storage closet on or about Dec. 15.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Jessie J. Ford, 61, of North Chicago, was arrested around 8 p.m. on Dec. 13 and charged with two counts of misdemeanor criminal damage to property and one count of attempted possession of a controlled substance after officers were dispatched to a report that he was trying to break into an ATM at the central train station, 1700 St. Johns Ave.

Anthony J. Barrows, 25, of the 1000 block of Ridge Road, Highland Park, was arrested shortly after 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 14 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and unlawful use of cannabis by a driver following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley and Clavey roads. Officers also issued him citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Rickey A. Kennedy, 33, of the 400 block of Cornell Avenue, Calumet City, was arrested around 2 a.m. on Dec. 18 following a traffic stop in the 2600 block of Skokie Valley Road. He was taken into custody on an out-of-state warrant and also charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and unlawful use of cannabis by a driver. He was also issued citations for failure to wear a seat belt, driving with an expired registration, illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control device. The passenger in the car, Jennifer R. O'Connor, 35, of the 1900 block of Case Avenue in Racine, Wisconsin, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after officers found a Smith & Wesson handgun in the car's glove compartment.

Jill E. Mazza, 44, of the 1700 block of South Crescent Avenue, Park Ridge, was arrested around 9 p.m. on Dec. 19 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing into a parked car in the 900 block of Deerfield Road. Officers also issued her citations for improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Joanna L. Schumacher, 38, of the first block of Pleasant Court, Fox Lake, was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 20 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers reported she crashed into the cement post holding up the gate to a car dealership in the 500 block of Skokie Valley Road and flipped over her car onto its driver's side. Juan Gonzalez-Cassarubias, 39, of the 800 block of Deerfield Road, Highland Park, was arrested around 2 a.m. on Dec. 25 after police were called to a report of a battery at his home. He was charged with aggravated domestic battery, a felony, and two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery.

Gonzalez-Cassarubias was ordered jailed ahead of trial until he can post the $2,000 cash portion of his bond.

Victor H. Rodriguez, 49, of the 500 block of Lotus Court, Wheeling, was arrested after officers arrived at the scene of a two-car crash where he had rear-ended another car in the turn lane of Half Day Road at Skokie Valley Road. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving with a suspended license and issued citations for operating a vehicle with an expired registration and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
