Two men were charged Sunday in connection with a shooting that led to a standoff at an Aurora home on Friday, police said.

Montgomery Police Chief Daniel Meyers said 19-year-old Kenneth Newsome is charged with three counts of attempted murder in a shooting that occurred just before 2:30 p.m. Friday near Melrose and Elliot avenues.

After the shooting, Newsome and a second man, 20-year-old Edwardo Correa Hernandez allegedly fled to a home in the 1100 block of Homer Avenue in nearby Montgomery, police said.

On Friday, police told reporters that officers who responded to the shooting found blood and shell casings at the scene, but the victim had already been taken to an area hospital.

Meyers declined to release any additional information on the victim or the victim’s condition on Sunday, and would not give details on what may have sparked the shooting.

After a more than three-hour standoff, both men exited the home and were taken into custody, along with a woman who was not charged in the incident, according to police.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Newsome is charged with three counts aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon without a valid FOID, unlawful possession of ammunition without a FOID and mob action, police said.

Nearby Krug Elementary School was placed on lockdown after Friday’s shooting.

Hernandez, who reportedly had a knife, is charged with mob action and unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

Montgomery Police were assisted by Aurora Police, Aurora Fire, Oswego, Kane and Kendall County, and the Illinois State Police, Meyers said, extending a special thanks to the Aurora Police Department’s Special Response Team, which was called in after the men barricaded themselves in the home and ultimately took them into custody.

“After a few hours the standoff ended peacefully,” Meyers said.

Police listed the Homer Avenue home as the address for both men. They were transported to the Kane County jail on Sunday to await Monday morning bond call, according to police.
