A Laburnum Drive resident reported at 6:11 p.m. Aug. 7 that they received a call from someone claiming that the resident needed to renew a subscription for a computer service. The resident refused to renew and the caller told them that they would issue a refund for the service. A short time later, the same person called back and stated that a clerical error had occurred, and they had deposited $2,799 into their account instead of $2,500. The caller assisted the resident in trying to set up the refund but was unsuccessful, so the caller instructed the resident to go purchase $2,500 in gift cards then call back with the numbers. The resident did purchase several hundred dollars’ worth of cards from one retailer, but then a cashier at a second store told the resident that it sounded like they were about to be the victim of a scam.
