Betty Theisen-Placek of Coldwell Banker said Wilson recorded much of the album Imagination in a studio built in the basement of the house.
"He dug out the basement an extra 7 feet so that they could record in this area," said Theisen-Placek.
Wilson chose St. Charles because of his manager, Joe Thomas, who lived next door, said Theisen-Placek. A falling out between the two led to the songwriter putting the place on the market in 1999 and leaving for California. They have since reconciled.
The house is now owned by a Russian man, who bought it in 2001 and turned it into a rental. He is now looking to sell.
In addition to the recording studio, the mansion includes a fitness room, sauna, an in-ground pool, two master suites and six bathrooms.
