Scenes from a Home (从 家 庭 场 景)

INT. DINING ROOM TABLE – HOME – NIGHT

A modest house on the cusp of downtown St.Charles. Father (38) and son (4), sans Mom and baby, are eating. Son is eating a Hebrew National hot dog inside a whole wheat piece of bread, light ketchup. Dad is eating a tofu dog tucked in a whole wheat piece of bread, light ketchup.

Dad: Did you have fun at summer school today?

Son: Yes.

Dad: Do you like Mrs. ________?

Son: Yes.

Dad: What did you learn?

Son: I don't know.

(Beat)

Son: Wanna take a shower with me?

Dad: I would love to.

CUT TO:

EXT. HOME – LAWN – SHORTLY AFTER DINNER

Sprinkler oscillating back and forth, back and forth. Dad is angling the sprinkler, trying to gauge and measure the trajectory of the water to perfectly cover most of the dying sod on the front yard. Son howls as he runs just outside of the falling water, close enough that a few drops land on his nylon swim shirt, beach shorts and soccer cleats.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT.  SONS BEDROOM – LATER

Tickle time and song time combo deal. Four songs. 1. Silent Night. 2. The Very Thought of You. 3. Baby Brother Song (an original to the sound of Chris Isaak’s “Forever Blue.”) and 4 … The Monster Song (an original initially sung like Tom Waits but reworked to sound natural).

There once was a baby monster who couldn’t find his way home, so he climbed up a tree and asked a birdie who pointed him on his way.

And the little baby monster went down to the river,  but couldn’t get across the water, so he asked the little elephant to help him across. And the little baby elephant put the little baby on his back and walked him over the bridge.

And the little baby monster went down to his home but he couldn’t get in the front door, so he asked the little lamb to let him in. And the little baby lamb took out his key and open the door for him.

And the little baby monster saw Mommy monster and gave her a great big hug. She read him some books, sang him some songs and she laid the baby down to sleep.
