Glencoe, Northfield and Winnetka police blotters from Nov. 28 - Dec. 12

GLENCOE, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT
Someone opened three unauthorized Verizon accounts using the identity of an Edgebrook Lane residents, accruing nearly $500 in charges prior to the evening of Nov. 28.

FORGERY
Staff at a business in the first block of Green Bay Road reported around noon on Nov. 29 that unidentified people had tried to use counterfeit $100 bill to make a purchase and fled the store when it was rejected.

SWEEPSTAKES SCAM
A Vernon Avenue resident reported on Nov. 30 that an unidentified person had told them they had won the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes and asked for personal information and to meet the resident at a Walmart to pay taxes on the winnings. The resident figured it was a scam and called police.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole about $7,500 worth of tools from a contractor's truck parked in the 400 block of Old Green Bay Road prior to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 30.
  • Someone got into an unlocked Audi in the 1100 block of Oak Ridge Drive prior to 11 p.m. on Dec. 10.
  • Someone got into an unlocked Buick in the 900 block of Eastwood Road prior to 11 p.m. on Dec. 10. Several items from inside were removed and found strewn around the road a short distance away.
  • Someone stole several items from inside two unlocked Jeeps parked in the 900 block of Green Bay Road prior to 2 a.m. on Dec. 11. Some items were found left on the road nearby, while others were found in other towns.

POWER SCAM
A Madison Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 3 that they had received a call from someone purporting to be with the power company threatening to show up and disconnect the resident's electricity for failure to pay bills unless the resident called a specified number to provide a payment.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 600 block of Vernon Avenue and stole an undetermined amount of jewelry sometime prior to 8:45 p.m. on Dec. 4.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Green Bay Road resident reported on the afternoon of Dec. 5 that someone had fraudulently charged $182.42 on their credit card. The resident called to cancel the card and received a refund.

UNLAWFUL USE OF A CREDIT CARD
An Oak Ridge Drive resident reported on the morning of Dec. 8 that they discovered an unauthorized $15 charge on their credit card. The resident cancelled the card, but it was never received. Instead, it was found to have been used for more than $5,000 worth of purchases.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone got into the Metra station, 724 Green Bay Road, overturned a bookshelf and left behind several empty cans of beer prior to 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 10.

TRESPASSING
An unidentified man was seen entering a property in the 700 block of Sheridan Road, looking inside a vehicle and fleeing the area around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 11.

SHOPLIFTING
Store staff at a business in the first block of Green Bay Road reported around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 that someone had stolen several bottles of liquor valued at less than $300.

ARRESTS

A 35-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 9:45 p.m. on Nov. 30 and charged with no valid driver's license. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, expired registration, possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis and a loud muffler following a traffic stop at the intersection of Dundee and Hohfelder roads.

A 21-year-old Beach Park man was arrested around 9 p.m. on Dec. 1 and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, 30 to 100 grams of cannabis and ticketed for speeding following a traffic stop in the area of Dundee Road and the Edens Expressway.

A 25-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 2 and cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. A 24-year-old Chicago woman who was a passenger in the car was issued citations for transportation of an open container of alcohol and possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis.

A 22-year-old Skokie woman was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and a 22-year-old Lincolnwood man was cited for possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis shortly before 2 a.m. on Dec. 9 in the are of Dundee Road and the Edens Expressway.

Leo B. McGuinn, 24, of the 1800 block of South 9th Street, Maywood, was arrested around 6 p.m. on Dec. 10 in the 700 block of Old Green Bay Road and turned over to Metra police.

WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Hawthorn Lane resident reported on the afternoon of Nov. 26 that someone had used their personal information to obtain fraudulent identification and managed to withdraw more than $5,000 from the resident's bank line of credit on Nov. 23.
  • A Mount Pleasant Street resident reported that someone had used their personal information to change their listed home address and open up a Wells Fargo account between 9 a.m. on Oct. 22 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 28. There was no reported loss at the time of the report.
  • A Sunset Road resident reported on Dec. 5 that someone had used their personal information to open up a Comcast account between Dec. 11, 2017, and Feb. 24, 2018, for a loss of $332.62.

CO-WORKER SCAM
A staffer at a school in the 200 block of Fairview Avenue reported that someone had sent them an email on Nov. 29 purporting to be a co-worker requesting the staff member purchase gift cards. There was no reported loss at the time of the report.

CHECK SCAMS

  • An Elm Street resident reported that someone sent a fraudulent check to pay for an item listed on an online marketplace between Nov. 23 and Nov. 29. There was no reported loss at the time of the report.
  • An Ash Street resident reported that someone sent a fraudulent check to pay for a rental property between Nov. 9 and Nov. 28. There was no reported loss at the time of the report.

SIGN THEFT
Someone stole signage from a business in the 800 block of Green Bay Road between 4 p.m. on Nov. 29 and 9 a.m. on Nov. 30 for a loss of $150.

THEFT OF UNATTENDED ITEMS

  • Someone stole an unattended iPhone worth $450 that had been left at New Trier High School between 8:13 a.m. and 5:33 p.m. on Dec. 5.
  • Someone stole cash from inside an unattended wallet in the 1300 block of Willow Road between 7:30 and 9 a.m. on Dec. 7 for a loss of $100.

ARRESTS

A 42-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 3 a.m. on Dec. 9 in the 1000 block of Tower Road and charged with driving with a revoked license by officers investigating an occupied vehicle parked in the lot of a closed business.

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT
A Mount Pleasant Street resident reported around 11 a.m. on Nov. 27 that someone stole their identity. Police are investigating.

FRAUD
A Meadowview Drive resident reported around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 that there had been a fraud with regard to a check that had been paid for services rendered.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON
Police were called to Temple Jeremiah, 937 N. Happ Road, around 11:45 a.m. on Nov. 28 for a report of a suspicious person who had been in the area around 11 a.m. who was gone by the time officers arrived.

UNWANTED PERSON
An employee of Stormy's Tavern & Grill, 1735 Orchard Lane, called police around 11 p.m. on Nov. 28 to report a customer was unwilling to leave. Officers spoke with the patron and arranged a taxi to drive them home.

COMPUTER CRIME
A resident in the 1600 block of Mount Pleasant Street reported around 9 a.m. that they believed that someone had tampered with their laptop and email. Police are investigating.

THEFT
A resident of the 600 block of North Happ Road reported on the afternoon of Dec. 3 that they noticed an item had been missing after their home was cleaned by a maid service. The item was later found back in its normal place after the service sent a supervisor to speak with the homeowner.

BATTERY
Police were called to Fields Volvo, 770 W. Frontage Road, around 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 5 for a report of two employees involved in a fight. Both refused to press charges.

DRIVEWAY DISPUTE
Police were called to the 2300 block of Clover Lane by a resident who reported a construction crew working on a house in the area had been using their driveway to turn trucks around to access the construction site. Officers asked the contractor not to use the caller's driveway.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized a car parked outside a business in the 100 block of Northfield Road prior to 6:40 a.m. on Dec. 6.

UTILITY THEFT
A business in the 300 block of South Happ Road reported around 11 a.m. on Dec. 6 that someone had shut off their gas meter and locked it with a padlock. The gas company confirmed they had not placed the lock on the meter. Police are investigating the incident.

FRAUD
An employee of a business in the 100 block of Waukegan Road reported around 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 that someone had made several unauthorized payments from a company account. Police are investigating the incident.

INTOXICATED CURRENCY EXCHANGE
Officers were called to responded to Northview Bank & Trust, 1751 Orchard Lane, around 12:45 p.m. on Dec. 8 for a report of an intoxicated man trying to exchange foreign currency. The bank refused to process the exchange and asked police to tell him not to come back. Officers advised the man not to return to the bank.

ARRESTS

David Sawyer, 33, of the 200 block of Panama Avenue, Hampshire, was arrested around 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 7 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 500 block of Sunset Ridge Road. He was also issued citations for speeding and improper lane usage.
