Fake Apple Staff Hijacks Computer; Car Stolen Overnight: Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
FRAUD
A Country Lane resident called a phone number associated with Delta Airlines they found following in an internet search. The person who picked up attempted to convince the resident to buy gift cards to pay for plane tickets over the course of a phone call that lasted two hours before the resident grew increasingly suspicious and hung up.
CAR BURGLARY/CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Someone stole a wallet from a car parked in the 2000 block of Frontage Road and used a stolen credit card to make several purchases prior to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 5.

HARASSMENT
A South Avenue resident reported around 9:30 a.m. Nov. 5 that someone had contacted them multiple times through phone and email with accusations of "flirtatious behavior."
LITTERING
A resident in the 500 block of Vernon Avenue reported around 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6 that someone had dumped old lottery tickets on their lawn.

IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Hohfelder Road resident reported around 4 p.m. Oct. 30 that someone charged $12 on their credit card to Microsoft. The charge was reversed and the resident got a new card before the thief charged another $12 to the replacement card. The money was refunded again and the resident received a second new card.
- An Oak Ridge Drive resident reported around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 7 that someone had used their identity to open a new checking account and get a $10,000 loan from a credit union. The account was closed after the resident contacted the credit union.
- An Oak Ridge Drive resident reported around 4 p.m. Nov. 7 that they had entered their personal information on a website after clicking on links in a "phishing" email confirming the purchase of a game in the Apple store. The resident discovered someone opened up a new Citibank credit card in their name and had the bank cancel it.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Adrianna O. Leech, 24, of the 4000 block of North Ashland Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 1 p.m. Oct. 29 in the 7000 block of Northwest 41st Street in Miami, Florida, and charged with residential burglary, credit card fraud and criminal trespassing in connection with incidents reported last year.
A 23-year-old Chicago Ridge man was arrested around 11:45 p.m. Nov. 1 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Dundee Road and Skokie Ridge Drive. He was also issued citations for expired registration and no insurance.

INCIDENTS
CAR BURGLARIES
Someone burglarized three cars parked in the 200 and 300 blocks of Latrobe Avenue during the night of Oct. 28 or early morning of Oct. 29.
THEFT
A resident in the 1700 block of Northfield Square reported around 1:15 p.m. Oct. 30 that someone had stolen a package after it had been delivered to their home.
SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT
Police were called to the post office at 1787 Orchard Lane around 5:30 p.m. Oct. 30 for a report of a customer who became belligerent after giving an invalid phone number when asked to verify their identity. Staff asked police to document the incident after asking the customer to leave.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Mount Pleasant Street resident reported around 2:30 p.m. Nov. 1 someone had made several attempts to open new unauthorized credit cards using their identity at big box stores.
- A Linder Avenue resident reported around 8 p.m. Nov. 1 that someone had opened an unauthorized cell phone account using their name.
- A Wagner Road resident reported around 3 p.m. Nov. 4 that someone had used their identity to open an unauthorized credit card account.
APPLE SCAMS
- A Norfork Road resident reported around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 2 that someone called them claiming to be with Apple support and told them their computer had been compromised. The caller convinced the resident to hand over remote access to the computer and the scammer made several purchases of gift cards using the residents accounts for an unspecified loss.
- A Woodland Lane South resident reported around 1:15 p.m. Nov. 3 that someone had called them claiming to be with Apple and telling them they had been been the victim of a hacker and needed to turn over control of their computer. The caller also made several requests for the resident to buy gift cards. The resident refused and hung up.
STOLEN CAR
A car was stolen from the 200 block of Bristol Street on the night of Nov. 6 or early morning of Nov. 7. It was found on the evening of Nov. 7 in Lincolnwood.
SUSPICIOUS PERSON
Police checking on a call of a suspicious person in the 1000 block of North Happ Road learned the person was waiting to be picked up by a driver for a ride-hailing company.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Robert A. Baxter Jr., 45, of the 1500 block of Tower Road, Winnetka, was arrested around 12:11 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Northfield Police Department and charged with violation of an order of protection in connection with a Nov. 1 incident.
A 57-year-old Park Ridge man was arrested around 4:45 p.m. Nov. 3 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Willow and Sunset Ridge roads. He was also issued citations for speeding 47 mph in a 30 mph zone and expired registration.
A 33-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 8 a.m. Nov. 4 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 1900 block of Willow Road.
Mary M. Flannery, 35, of the 600 block of Raleigh Road, Glenview, was arrested around 2:15 p.m. Nov. 4 and charged with theft of under $500 following an investigation into a theft reported in September from a home in the 300 block of Churchill Street.
A 40-year-old Northfield man was arrested around 9:30 a.m. Nov. 6 and charged with no valid driver's license following a traffic stop in the area of Willow and Sunset Ridge roads. He was also issued a citation for failure to yield.
A 35-year-old Skokie man was arrested around 5:45 p.m. Nov. 10 and charged with no valid driver's license following a traffic stop in the area of Willow and Waukegan roads. He was also issued citations for one headlight and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
THEFTS
- Someone stole a wallet from the purse of a patron at Panera Bread, 1199 Wilmette Ave., prior to 12:45 p.m. on Oct. 31.
- Two patrons at Panera Bread, 1199 Wilmette Ave., reported that someone stole wallets from their purses between 11 and 11:34 a.m. Nov. 2.
- The manager of a landscaping crew working in the 1000 block of Mohawk Road reported Nov. 4 that someone had stolen three landscaping tools from an unlocked trailer that day.
- Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported that a man in a black sweat suit with white striping and a woman in a dark jacket with sweatpants stole an undetermined amount of higher end cosmetic products around 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5.
- Someone stole a purse from a shopper at the Chalet Nursery between 10:30 a.m. and noon Nov. 8.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone scratched the passenger side and the roof of a car parked in the 400 block of Poplar Drive between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Nov. 4.
VANDALISM
An employee reported Nov. 9 that someone had spray painted a train at the Linden CTA Purple Line station in the 300 block of Linden Avenue between 3 a.m. and 5:31 p.m.
CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 200 block of Woodbine Avenue reported someone broke into their unlocked car and stole about $5 in change.
ARRESTS
Joseph A. Tucker III, 27, of the 1800 block of Laurel Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 3 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit following a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Lake Avenue.
Pawel Kowalewski, 33, of the 600 block of Arlington Avenue, Des Plaines, was arrested around 12:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and charged with unlawful use of a weapon and driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Laurel Avenue and Old Orchard Road. Police reported a set of brass knuckles was found in the center console of his car.
Stefanie Marie Arellano, 20, of the 700 block of Long Road, Glenview, turned herself in to Wilmette police on a warrant issued by authorities in Lee County for failing to appear in court.
A 25-year-old Round Lake man was arrested around 7:30 a.m. Nov. 7 and charged with driving with a suspended license after another driver reported he had pointed a gun at them. Officers showed up and took the man into custody at a gas station in the area of Lake Avenue and Green Bay Road. Police did not find any weapon and the caller conceded he had never actually seen the Round Lake resident brandish a weapon. No weapon was found.
Alex Kaganovich, 59, of the 200 block of Greenleaf Avenue, Wilmette, was arrested on Nov. 7 at his home and charged with violating an order of protection by calling and texting a person between Nov. 2 and Nov. 7.
Azfar Mon, 56, of the 1500 block of Arborwood Circle, Romeoville, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 10 and charged with driving under the influence and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath test above 0.08.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
EMAIL SCAM
A Green Bay Road resident reported around 11:30 a.m. Oct. 31 that someone had sent them an email purporting to come from a known contact and asked them to buy gift cards. The resident purchased $650 of the cards before realizing.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Chestnut Court resident reported around 7 p.m. Nov. 2 that someone had used their identity to open an American Express card to make an unauthorized purchase for more than $53.
PHONE SCAM
An Old Green Bay Road resident reported someone called them by phone purporting to be an employee of the Social Security Administration and asked the resident to buy gift cards in exchange for a replacement Social Security card for a loss of $6,500.
ARRESTS
A 20-year-old Buffalo Grove man was arrested around 10:45 p.m. Oct. 28 in the area of Oak Street and Green Bay Road and charged with driving with a suspended license.
Patrick F. Herron, 28, of the 700 block of Oak Street, Winnetka, was arrested around 9 a.m. Nov. 2 and charged with domestic battery following a report of a battery at his home.
Michael A. Peccia, 46, of the 1000 block of Merril Street, Winnetka, was arrested around 1 a.m. Nov. 9 and charged with domestic battery following a report of a Nov. 8 battery at his home.
Mary C. Buck, 48, of the 100 block of De Windt Road, Winnetka, was arrested around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 9 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in their block of residence. Buck was also issued citations for improper lane usage, negligent driving and failure to avoid an accident.
